Koala sketches

These are sketches of koalas from my photos at San Diego Zoo. The left page is one koala, and the right page is a second koala. The second one climbed down out of his/her tree and walked around on the ground a bit, stopping at a gate as if waiting for it to open. It was indeed near closing time for the zoo.

Portrait of my son Theo in oil

This is my day three result from a 3-day workshop by Craig Nelson. The goal is to improve one’s painting skills by working fast and focusing primarily on value and form. But this third day we were allowed to slow down and spend 4-5 hours on a single painting. This portrait is not finished yet. I plan to go back in, fix all the mistakes, and add lots of layers to refine and perfect this painting. Read more…

Four quick study portraits in oil. These are my day two results from a 3-day workshop by Craig Nelson. The goal is to improve one’s painting skills by working fast and focusing primarily on value and form. This weekend is also my first time painting in oils. The first two paintings with the woman subject took 25 minutes each, and the two with the man took 45 minutes each.

Toning canvases

This Friday through Sunday, I get to attend a 3-day painting workshop on doing quick studies, by Craig Nelson. The supply list includes a dozen or so toned canvases. I toned the smaller canvas panels tonight with acrylic burnt umber. Tomorrow I will tone the larger canvases. I plan to work in oil paint, which is brand new to me. I’m excited and nervous! I’ll be sure to share my work with you here.

Oil paint newb

My first time using oil paint: making color swatches. Of course there’s a cat hair in the cadmium yellow swatch. Trying out how the paint works on canvas. I’m going to a three-day painting workshop next weekend. Yay!

Wombat sketch

Mr. Sketch markers on white cardstock. Theo and I were at his friend’s birthday party. The kids decorated cookies and the boxes to put them in. Theo insisted that I drew something on the back of his box.
