The first animals that humans sent into space were fruit flies. They were aboard a U.S.-launched V-2 rocket in 1947. Subsequently, the U.S. sent a rhesus monkey in 1949, followed by a series of primates, mice, dogs amd other animals sent by either the U.S. or the Soviet Union. The first animal in orbit was Laika, a Soviet dog. The first human in space was Yuri Gagrin of the Soviet Union, in 1961.
