DNA shows that the closest living relatives to dolphins and whales are hippos. They share a common ancestor that walked on land with four legs.

The fact that dolphins, whales, and hippos all move about in water is a matter of convergent evolution–the independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages as a result of having to adapt to similar environments.
